Air It Out Award – Week 10: Marcus Mariota

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota wins our Week 10 Air It Out Award with his impressive 295 yard, 4 touchdown performance!

Mariota has been one of the most dominant quarterbacks since Week 5, averaging 260 yards and throwing 17 touchdowns to 3 interceptions over those six games. He continued his run in Week 10 with an emphatic 47-25 win over Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

The former Oregon Duck completed his first ten passes of the game and led the Titans into the locker room at halftime with a 35-16 lead. Mariota threw four touchdowns to four different players with Tajae Sharpe, Rishard Matthews, Anthony Fasano and Kendall Wright all getting in on the action. Delanie Walker also caught a touchdown pass from running back DeMarco Murray, which I guess would count as an assist for Mariota? Maybe? We’ll count it.

Either way, the Hawaii-native put on a dominant performance this week and looks like he may just lead this Titans team to it’s first winning season since 2011. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Mariota-led Titans make their first playoff appearance since 2008. With Brock Osweiler and the rest of the Texans’ offense struggling, it seems like it’s only a matter of time until the Titans overtake the Texans for the lead in the AFC South.

Mariota has 2,482 yards and 21 touchdowns (fourth most in the NFL) on the year, putting him on pace for 3,971 yards and 34 touchdowns. That would be the most passing yards ever by a Titans quarterback. In the franchise’s history, only Warren Moon threw for more in 1990 and 1991 as a member of the Houston Oilers. Amazingly, no Titans quarterback has ever thrown over 30 touchdowns. The only quarterback in franchise history to throw for more than 34 touchdowns is Houston Oilers quarterback George Blanda with 36 touchdowns in 1961. So the single season franchise passing touchdown record is within reach. In other words, Mariota is having a historically good season for a Titans quarterback. The team will continue to ride Mariota’s arm and Titans fans have every right to be excited about where he’ll take them.
