Ground and Pound Award – Week 5: David Johnson

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson continues to light it up in his second year, cutting loose for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns against the 49ers en route to winning our Week 5 Ground and Pound Award.

Rookie sensation Ezekiel Elliott had a big day too, and made a push to catch up with Johnson in the polls, taking home over 30% of the votes. But in the end, the image of David Johnson slicing through the 49ers defense was too strong in our minds. Just in case you need a reminder of how good he was last Thursday night, here are the highlights from the game:

The Cards’ second-year star showed off his vision, patience and agility as he made cut after cut to roll through the San Francisco defense.

David Johnson has been the bright spot of the Cardinals’ rough 2-3 start to the season. He has become arguably one of the NFL’s best all-around backs, and is a match-up nightmare coming out of the backfield. With Carson Palmer struggling to regain his 2015 MVP-worthy form, the Cardinals have leaned on Johnson to get the offense rolling each week.

Larry Fitzgerald is still one of the team’s most invaluable players, but David Johnson is the one the Cards most often look to for a spark. I have a feeling we will see plenty more sparks out of Johnson throughout the year, as the Cardinals get the rest of their offense back on track.

Johnson is currently tied for second in the league with 5 touchdowns, and is on pace 16 touchdowns and 1,462 yards.
